Color Doppler Ultrasound
Duplex ultrasound imaging is arguably the single most important advance in Phlebology, the medical discipline concerned with the veins. In order for veins to be treated properly, exact location of venous reflux needs to be identified and any contraindications to treatment need to be ruled out. At Chicago Vein Institute, our Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) performs complete diagnostic evaluation of the deep and superficial venous systems to identify damaged veins and valves and pinpoint the location of venous reflux. We performed more than 350 complete ultrasound exams in 2010 alone.

The ultrasound is painless and noninvasive. Patients are required to wear loose clothing, which will be provided by Chicago Vein Institute. Patients can expect to the complete ultrasound appointment to last 90 minutes.

Regular surveillance, even after successful treatment, is important. Patients should return for a three-month and a six-month follow-up visit after treatment, and should schedule regular yearly follow-up ultrasound exams.
Endovenous thermal ablation with Radiofrecuency (VNUS Closure)
VenefitTM VNUS is a minimally invasive, FDA approved treatment for insufficient varicose veins. Under local anesthesia and with the assistance of ultrasound, a Radiofrecuency catheter is inserted into the saphenous vein through a tiny (1-2 mm) opening. The RF catheter:-VenefitTM formally known as VNUS Closure is slowly heated for 20 seconds and treats a 7 cms length each time, and seals the damaged vein as the catheter is withdrawn. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and leaves no visible scars. Since 2008 Dr. Lanes has performed over 3.000 thermal ablation cases.
  • no downtime
  • no scarring
  • yields immediate results
  • can be done on all skin types
  • performed in the doctor's office
  • minimal postoperative pain and discomfort
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
´┐╝Ambulatory phlebectomy is a method of removing large, bulging varicosities. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia administered in the doctor's office. The veins are removed through micro-incisions as small as 1mm.
  • no downtime
  • can be done on all skin types
  • performed in the doctor's office
  • minimal postoperative pain and discomfort
  • no general anesthesia
Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy eliminates the smaller veins, including unsightly and embarrassing branching veins of the legs. With the assistance of ultrasound and using an extremely fine and nearly painless needle, a small amount of a sclerosing solution is injected into the affected veins. This causes the veins to collapse and become absorbed by the body's natural healing response. It usually takes 3-5 sessions to provide the most effective results.

Treated veins gradually disappear within three to six months. Because blood flow is shifted to healthy veins, sclerotherapy can improve the circulation in the legs.
  • no downtime
  • no scarring
  • takes about 30 minutes
  • can be done on all skin types
  • no anesthesia
  • performed in the doctor's office
  • minimal pain and discomfort
Surface Sclerotherapy
Surface sclerotherapy, or cosmetic sclerotherapy, is used for treatment of spider veins and other small veins visible on the skin's surface. A fine needle is used to inject a sclerosant, which causes the veins to eventually disappear, resulting in excellent cosmetic results.
  • no downtime
  • no scarring
  • can be done on all skin types
  • no anesthesia
  • performed in the doctor's office
  • minimal pain and discomfort
Elastic Compression Therapy
Compression therapy relieves symptoms associated with vein disorders, helps with overall circulation and drastically lowers the recurrence of varicose veins after vein surgery, thereby increasing long-term effectiveness of treatment. Compression also reduces risk of developing blood clots and other side effects.
Insurance Coverage
Most insurances provide coverage for color Doppler ultrasound and medically necessary vein treatment. If a written request is needed, we can assist you in obtaining the coverage for the procedures by providing a letter for the purposes of the treatment. To be covered means to demonstrate symptomatic venous reflux disease.

Certain insurance companies may require conservative therapy (compression stockings, elevation of legs, walking) before providing coverage for vein treatment. The duration of the conservative therapy period can range from six weeks to six months, depending on your insurance policy.

Please contact us so that we could determine together which option is best for you. If you do not have insurance coverage, please call our office at (954) 961.1200 to discuss your options.
